#M2S2 Screening & Weblink
The public can log in to the above weblink to learn about Metabolic Syndrome in English, Tamil, and seven Indian languages, such as Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, and Bengali. The public awareness created through this multilingual information will likely help the public all over India by enabling them to report to doctors early for Screening, diagnosis, and treatment of MetS, thereby preventing consequences.
Metabolic Syndrome – An Overview:
Metabolic syndrome comprises obesity (Abdominal girth in men > 40 inches, in women > 35 inches), high blood pressure (130/85 mm Hg), high blood triglycerides – >150 mg (Bad Cholesterol), low levels of HDL cholesterol- < 40 mg in men and,55 mg in women- (Good Cholesterol), and insulin resistance – fasting blood sugar > 100mgs (Diabetes).
The Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is triggered by insulin resistance and its resultant hyperinsulinemia. The two most essential and universally agreed causes of insulin resistance are increased body fat (particularly central obesity) and physical inactivity. Other causes include certain genetic/pro-genetic factors, an unhealthy atherogenic diet, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol intake. The global prevalence is estimated at 20%–25% of the adult population. As per a report in the Indian Journal of Community Medicine in 2023, the prevalence of fatty Liver diseases associated with metabolic syndrome in Chennai is reported to be an alarming 61.8 %. It is high time we must catch them at the asymptomatic stage.
The documented evidence suggests that MetS increases the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) by two to three times and of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by five times. The MetS leads to liver cirrhosis, heart attack, brain stroke, musculoskeletal disorders and cancers. Obesity is a high-risk factor for cancers of the uterus, breast, colon, gall bladder, food pipe, stomach, kidney, etc. Thus, treating MetS early controls many of the mentioned disorders and diseases. It needs concerted, all-around efforts for prevention, early detection, management, and research, as well as for our country’s public health providers and clinicians.
In this regard, the M2S2 project will be a great boon for the public, allowing them to identify High blood pressure, good and bad cholesterol, BMI, blood sugar level, and cardiac status through ECG at the pre-symptomatic stage. This project will be apt for mass medical Screening in medical camps, which will aid in epidemiological surveys, too.
